1. Pack for the Weather and Activities

  • Layered Clothing: Costa Rica’s weather varies by region. Pack light, breathable clothing for the beach and warmer areas, and layers for cooler mountain areas. A rain jacket is essential, especially during the rainy season (May to November).
  • Comfortable Shoes: Whether you’re hiking through rainforests, exploring national parks, or strolling through charming towns, sturdy, comfortable footwear is a must.
  • Sun Protection: Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. The tropical sun can be intense.

2. Prepare for Outdoor Adventures

  • Bug Repellent: Mosquitoes can be prevalent, especially in rainforest areas. Bring insect repellent to stay comfortable.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Costa Rica’s tap water is generally safe to drink, and bringing a reusable water bottle helps reduce plastic waste.
  • Respect Nature: Follow local guidelines for protected areas, such as national parks and wildlife reserves. Avoid feeding or disturbing wildlife, and never litter.

The exchange rate has been consistent around ¢500 to $1 for a few years. This makes approximate conversions very easy. Just double the number on the Costa Rican banknote to get the U.S. dollar equivalent.

3. Currency and Money Tips

  • Local Currency: The currency is the Costa Rican colón (CRC), but U.S. dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas. Carrying a mix of both can be helpful.
  • ATMs and Banks: ATMs are available in most towns, but rural areas may have fewer options. Credit cards are commonly accepted, but having some cash on hand is useful.
  • Tipping: Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. A 10% service charge is often included at restaurants.
